2022-2023, Bali

	
"Two Weeks’ Boyfriend" - a web documentary in which Elena Sakharova, while living in Bali, explores her ideas about long-term relationships: how social media impacted her expectations of love and what her true needs in a relationship look like.

Bali is full of men. They are handsome, athletic, have a sense of humor, big hearts and whatever you want men to have, but... There’s always that “but” around the corner. Those men come here for a vacation. Usually it’s just a two-weeks vacation.&#38;nbsp; 
So, then these handsome caring men with big hearts always leave Вali. They always leave me. 

In the five years I've lived here, my heart has been broken many times. My longest relationship lasted about two months. Yet, usually I have those two weeks’ boyfriends.

Meanwhile, so many couples visit Bali for vacation. They seem happy, and I see them everywhere. They book massages together, sunbathe on the beach, share bikes, take selfies, and dine out.

I've been observing all these couples and wondering: "What am I missing out on? What exactly do I want to experience in a long-term relationship? Is there a chance I can experience it now?"

I made a personal dream list of what a perfect, loving, and caring long-term relationship would look like for me. I also reevaluated my ideas about happy love with the help of men I met through dating apps. All of these guys you will see in the pictures I saw for the first time in my life.

I was yearning for feelings: to feel a connection, a commitment, to feel like I had a real relationship, even if only for five seconds.

Through this project, I was discovering answers for some uncomfortable questions. Will I feel something real while playing romantic moments just for a camera shot? Where do my ideas about love from? Can a shoot become a start of a real relationship? What can I learn about modern love through this project? How will I feel when I see myself in these photos?


I hope this project will bring some inspiration and support to any single women who use online dating or are considering giving it a try.

During the project, we followed five rules1. The matches were real. I swiped right on guys whom I genuinely liked.
 2.They knew about the photo project from the start.

3. They could choose the activity they liked best from the list. 

4. We could stop the episode if either of us felt uncomfortable. (This never happened).

5. After the shoot, we went on a normal date.

How did men react when I invited them to the project?

At first, I thought no one would want to participate in such a thing. I thought men barely liked to be photographed, especially in public places and especially playing out weird romantic scenarios with someone they just met. I thought no one would want to do it. 

Boy was I wrong!

I changed my bio on Tinder and Bumble. The new one was saying:&#38;nbsp; 

“Hi guys! I am looking for a short-term boyfriend for my photography project. Let’s shoot 1 episode of my “happy couple” project. I’ll play the role of a girlfriend and take some pictures of us doing activities like cooking together, going grocery shopping, surfing,&#38;nbsp; etc. You can choose the activity”. 

And they swiped me right and texted:

I am in

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Let’s do it! &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp; 
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Yes!!! Le’t go!!&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;


And when we finally met, some of them were excited, while others were more stressed than excited. But overall, they were patient, kind, and supportive during the shooting, and so was I.


Who took these pictures if I'm in the frame?
A tripod. The entire project was filmed using an iPhone. So, I brought my tripod and the phone with me. I composed the shot, activated the timer, and the phone took a picture every three seconds. We “rehearsed” episodes from my list several times. Lots of times being honest!

About the authorElena Sakharova born 1988, 34 years old

Born and raised in Yaroslavl, Russia, Elena graduated from the university in Yaroslavl with a degree in journalism. Afterwards, she moved to Moscow to pursue a career in journalism, first working for online media and later on as a PR manager for television.

At the age of 29 Elena quit her job and moved to Bali, Indonesia, where she has been living since 2017. For the last 5 years, Elena has been an entrepreneur.

As an artist, she studies at the School of Modern Photography Docdocdoc and explores the topics of modern love, online dating and the impact of social media on relationships perception. Elena also uses photography as a tool to comprehend and transform the personal story.

	🏠 🐈 Me and Lenny✅&#38;nbsp; “A family portrait at home“

	Lenny was the first man who I met through a photo project. He was extremely supportive. He was convinced that we were doing something cool and meaningful,&#38;nbsp; even more than me.

	Three years ago, I found this cat in the garbage bin next to my house. The cute little ginger boy immediately won my heart and we have become best friends ever since. He sleeps in my bed, brings me mice, lizards and birds as gifts, and always asks to be scratched behind the ears. He never misses a meal and keeps me company when I work on the computer. He sits next to me while I am taking English lessons, doing client calls or watching something educational.

I love this cat so much. Yet, sometimes I wonder:
	

 What if I become a cat lady?

	You know what the term “cat lady” means, right? It’s often used to describe someone being single, kooky, and weird.
Sure, I’m not insane. I know, it's just a cat. Yet, sometimes the stereotype is hard to shake. My mind wonders what if I ended up being with 35 cats and still single? I don’t want this. 
And it's so unfair what society keeps telling us about cat ladies all the time. And not a single word about cat gentlemen. Why would I even bother? Can’t I just enjoy my time with a cat if I am single? 
So, I took some pictures of my “perfect family at home” in order to feel like everything is just fine. Now I finally don’t need to worry about the cat lady story.

	I feel the most lonely and helpless in IKEA and other similar shops.

There I find myself surrounded by people who are in relationships, newly engaged, planning to move in together, married, expecting a baby, or already having kids. 

And then there’s me, alone. That sucks. 
Every time I have to choose a set of wine glasses, houseplants, kitchen knives, or curtains, I feel lonely. You know what I mean.

	That's why I added this episode “Choosing houseplants together” to my list. This way, I could experience it as if I were in a couple. It was wonderful and fun. Even though it was just for a photo project, for a second, I felt like it was real.

I hope that one day I’ll be choosing monsteras with my significant other. And we will bring home a few big ones.

🎾 Correy✅ “Playing tennis together”
	

I wasn’t sure if he would show up. But Correy woke up at 6 AM to be at the tennis court by 7 AM. He did it even though he went out the night before. For Bali, this is unexpected behavior.

People in Bali often cancel dates a couple of hours before or even in 10 minutes before. Some people don’t show up at all and always have an excuse. Of course they do. One of them told me his cat was giving birth, which was why he couldn’t come for dinner. Another one was “too tired after a long day”. Later on the same day I saw him walking along the beach with another girl.

So Correy showing up at 7:00 AM after a sleepless night is a real hero.

Because I like to play tennis and it would be great if my future partner could play it too. 

On my way to the tennis court, I was thinking not just about tennis but also about all my hobbies and about the possibility of meeting a man who could share at least half of them. 

But do men have to fit into all my hobbies? And can I see myself with someone who only likes some of my spare time activities? To clarify my thoughts, I made a list:

Would be great if my future partner:

︎ Did surfing (not too bad and not too good)︎︎ Played chess
︎ Did pilates
In this case, we could do all these activities together. It could be so much fun! Afterwards, I made a list not only of hobbies which I would love to share with my future partner. I put all my expectations into one list.

&#38;nbsp;💃️🕺Alex&#38;nbsp;✅ To Brush my hair


I adore this guy with all my heart, his smile, his hair, everything about him. It started as a photography project, but it quickly became something real. I wish every next episode could be shot with him.

	After vacation in Bali he went back home to Australia. I didn't have an Australian visa at that time and couldn’t afford the trip.

I was feeling sad and empty and postponed the project. I stopped doing it for 3 months.

	What made me fall for him? Initially, it was his appearance. He was just my type. Tall, blonde, blue-gray eyes, long hair, that smile. Who could probably resist? I couldn’t. And didn't want to.

Yet, looks can only take you so far. After a while, personality becomes more important. He was funny, kind, and lovely. I felt very alive when I was around him.

I suppose without this photo project, we might have just met on Tinder and had a drink of coconut or coffee on the beach. Boooring! And it could have turned into one of those dates where you barely remember the guy's name a month later.

However, the project provided us with a unique perspective and quickly brought us into a more intimate context. We danced together (he said he hated dancing, but he did it for me), we felt shy together, we laughed together, and he carried me up the stairs on his back.

The most touching moment for me was when I asked him to brush my hair. For me it was a very personal request. Don't know why, but for me it felt very intimate, very special. It might sound a bit odd now. 

And he said: “Sure. How do you want me to do it?”

The biggest takeaway from this for me was that it's actually ok to ask someone to do something that makes you feel good. Even if it might sound a bit odd.

	It's been a while since I last saw him. I kissed him in July. And now it is February.

Anyway,&#38;nbsp; next week I’m going to Australia for vacation.

	With Jack, we spent a day at the beach. It was this rare kind of day when time goes by really slow. You’ve got no plans, and you are not in a hurry for anything. You’ve got a nice company and all day ahead to laze around. We had nothing to worry about except applying sunscreen every two hours to avoid sunburn.

	First dates can be a bit overrated.
There's always a ton of pressure to make a good impression, have a fun time, and figure out if you want to see each other again. It can all be a bit overwhelming.

It’s a lot of pressure. It’s stressful. New person, new place, new environment. For me, it's often hard to just chill and have a good time, like all those articles say.
And let's not forget about all the self-doubt that creeps in - is my mascara smudging? Is my outfit alright? Does my hair look good after biking in a helmet? What should I talk about? What should I ask him? What is he thinking of me now? Do I like him? Does he like me? It's a lot to think about.

	This time, it was different for me. I didn't care much neither about my mascara nor my outfit. I was feeling comfy, as if we were just having a good time doing nothing. Staring at the ocean, eating pizza, having chit-chat.

	We also talked about what brought us to dating apps. He said, for him it was just fun, meaning he would be totally fine with seeing various women at the same time. 

For me, becoming one of those women was anything but fun.
Two years ago, I may have responded to this first date differently. I may have become upset and thought that the entire experience was a waste of time, feeling as though it had led to nowhere. I might have even scolded myself for not having asked about his intentions sooner.

Now, my perspective has changed. It was indeed a great day. Even if we are looking for something different, it was a day well-spent.

	Cezar was all set for the photoshoot and was ready to walk back and forth on the beach with me, cuddled up, until it got dark or until I was happy with the result.
And I was happy with those photos. They turned out just like I pictured in my head. I know they're super cliche, but I guess I picked up the idea from all the love story photoshoots I've seen on Instagram. Photographers who shoot love stories in Bali (and not only in Bali) often go for similar looks. 

Even Cezar knew what I was talking about when I said we were gonna shoot a "Happy couple sunset walk at the beach" kinda episode.
We could sell these photos on stock photo websites and people could buy them while searching for "beautiful couple walking along the beach." They could be used on travel websites or as the cover for articles on online media, like "5 tips: getting ready for a vacation." They could also work for a poster in a bank advertising like "Take out a loan and go on a romantic trip tomorrow."

	Now as I look at these photos, if I didn't know the people in the pictures, I would think that it's a real couple. To me, this series of photos looks frighteningly realistic.
This gives me a weird feeling.

Because I know these two people barely know each other. They met an hour ago. Now they're walking along the beach, but they'll never see each other again.

Yet when I look at the photos, my brain completes the story of a real, true love. In reality, that love never existed.

I was thinking, how many Instagram photos appear to be showing us those perfect couples, whereas in reality the feelings and relationships there are far from genuine? I just don't know about it.
